Non-Electric Appliances & Tools

I grew up in Northeast Ohio, a region located near many Amish communities. Because of this, I know a thing or two about living without electricity. That is - I know a thing or two about this type of lifestyle - I just prefer not to practice it. At any rate, the Amish live without electricity (for the most part - this seems to be changing based on the particular "bishop" or community in question). They seem to do just fine; and they live in a climate that gets pretty hot in the summer and very cold in the winter - so they thrive in extreme temperatures, and have done so since the 1800's. I write this because if you are seriously thinking about setting up solar cells on your roof, or putting up a wind turbine in your backyard - you should first take a few cues from the Amish, and learn to drop your electricity usage a bit.lehmans Doing so may allow for the installation of a less costly solar or wind energy system, while barely changing your lifestyle. The best source that I have seen for non-electric appliances, tools, and equipment is Lehman's Hardware, which is a general store located in central Ohio which got it's start by catering to the Amish populations that live near it.

Lehman's, which kills the myth that an Amish-centric business might not be very tech-savvy, has one of the most advanced online catalogues around - it puts the online presences of much larger retailers to shame. Over time, Lehman's has become something of a tourist attraction - it is not unusual to visit the store and find tour buses parked outside (near a couple of unassuming Amish buggies), and the aisles inside crowded with seniors enjoying a day trip. As with anything that takes on a "tourist" tinge, the prices that Lehman's generally charge are a little bit higher than those prices you might find elsewhere. So, for more common "non-electric" tools (hammers, screwdrivers, rolling pins, condoms) shop around. If you then can't find the non-electric item you need, visit Lehman's online (or in person, when you're finished visiting the Rock Hall of Fame in Cleveland or the NFL Football Hall of Fame in Canton). Tell them Zedekiah Yoder sent you. Trust me, they've heard of him.
